RBC First Office for Injury Prevention

Intentional and unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for people aged one to forty-four years of age and truly are a silent epidemic in Canada.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and spinal cord injuries (SCI) result in disability, co-morbidities and mortality. They are also a burden on the health-care costs. TBI and SCI can largely be prevented by addressing risk prone behaviours.

The Trauma Association of Canada (TAC) mandates that all physicians, surgeons and allied health-care professionals are accountable for:

  • Reducing the incidence of traumatic injuries
  • Ensuring optimal care is provided to the patient
  • Collaborating with partners and providing leadership (trauma hospitals)

Sunnybrook has been a pioneer in this area and in the development of a permanent office for injury prevention on site.

The RBC First Office for Injury Prevention, established in 1986 within our Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care (TECC) program, aims to prevent traumatic injuries and injury related mortality across all ages through community education, collaboration and awareness.

Originally a 'one person-one program' office, we've since grown to provide community, provincial, national and international leadership in injury prevention. Our office delivers multiple programs and resources both independently as well as with an extensive team of collaborators.
