Your safety

In case of emergency while on the Sunnybrook campus, call 5555. This number is reserved for life threatening or personal safety issues only. State the nature of your emergency and provide your location so that help can be dispatched to you quickly.

General Safety

  • Do not bring valuables to the hospital. We are not responsible for lost or stolen property.
  • Know your health care professionals. All hosptial staff and volunteers wear hosptial photo identification. If you have concerns about the identity of a vistor or staff member, please contact security.
  • Latex balloons & products are not permitted in the hospital due to possible latex allergies.
  • Cell phones should not be used while in the hospital. 
  • We are a fragrance-free facility. Please refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, hairspray or aftershave. 
  • We are a smoke-free facility 

Patient Care Safety

  • Be involved in your health care. Speak up if you have questions or concerns about your care.
  • Wash/sanitize your hands - It is a good idea to ask everyone - your health care team and visitors - to wash their hands as well.
  • Before receiving any treatment or medication, confirm your name with the care provider & confirm the correct treatment, procedure or medication is being dispensed.
  • Make sure you know what to do when you go home from the hospital or from your medical appointment. 
  • If you can, ask a family member or friend to be there with you as your advocate. It is important to have someone who can help get things done and speak up for you if you can't.

Medication Safety

  • Recognize your medication. If the medications you are given do not look familiar, speak up and alert your nurse, doctor or pharmacist. Do the same when picking up medication from the pharmacy.
  • Make sure that all of your doctors, nurses and pharmacy staff know about every medication you are taking. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, and dietary supplements such as vitamins and herbs.
  • Allergies and adverse reactions: Make sure your doctors, nurses and pharmacy staff know about any allergies and adverse reactions you have had to medications.
  • When your doctor writes you a prescription, make sure you can read it.
  • Ask for information about your medicines in terms you can understand - both when your medicines are prescribed and when you receive them.
