What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a specialized X-ray of the breast used to detect and diagnose any abnormalities. It may be followed by breast ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging if additional images are required for a more precise diagnosis.

Getting a mammogram: what to expect

On the day of the test

Do not wear talc powder or deodorant on the day of your examination as this may interfere with the X-rays.

The test will take approximately 50 minutes, including preparation.

Check-in for your appointment at the Bayview Campus (2075 Bayview Ave), M-wing, 6th floor, room M6-205 in the Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre.

After check-in, you’ll be asked to change into a hospital gown, removing all clothing and jewelry above the waist. Our technologists will ask you a number of questions, including your medical history and any allergies you may have.

During the test

During the test, your breasts are positioned on a breast support platform. A plastic paddle compresses your breasts from above while X-ray images are taken.

There may be some discomfort for a few seconds during the compression; however compression is necessary to obtain the clearest possible picture with the least amount of radiation.

After the test

You can resume your usual activities immediately after the test.

The technologist will send your images to the radiologist for review. If the radiologists who reads your mammogram identifies any areas in your breast(s) that need additional imaging such as an ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging, our Breast Imaging clerical staff will call you with an appointment.

The results of your breast imaging should be available to your referring physician within two to three business days after your test. Your physician will discuss the test results with you.

Your report can also be accessed through MyChart in two to three weeks after your test.
