Department of Professional Nursing Practice

Sunnybrook nurses can expect to be fully engaged as members of the inter-professional care team, challenged to think critically, and encouraged to develop their career options within the range of clinical specialties and nursing roles. There are numerous opportunities to advance in practice, education, management and research positions.

Our department exists to support all nurses to be the best they can be, to learn and grow throughout their careers, and to contribute to exemplary patient care experiences and development of the nursing profession.  Sunnybrook is a dynamic institution that values nursing staff and their important place in health care.

Our department is fully committed to supporting professional development, promoting excellence in interprofessional patient and family centered care, and fostering innovation and development of new knowledge.

Our staff have advanced preparation and expertise in nursing practice, education, change management, and research.

We provide leadership, consultation, education, and coaching to individuals, teams, and groups to support nurses to take on formal and informal leadership roles, translate evidence into practice changes, explore clinical questions, and share their expertise within Sunnybrook and across the broader nursing community.

Program-based advanced practice nurses, clinical educators, and nurse practitioners work closely with our department on practice, education, and research initiatives.
 
Nurses have a voice through our fully integrated shared governance model that includes unit-based and corporate nursing councils. Nurses influence policy and program development, and play a leadership role in developing, implementing and evaluating evidence based practices and quality improvement initiatives which includes quality of working life for staff.
