Why refer to Sunnybrook?

Sunnybrook's Women & Babies program offers expert, personalized care for women and their families before, during and after pregnancy. Each year we deliver approximately 4,000 babies, one quarter of which are high-risk deliveries and require specialized care for mother and baby.

Our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) cares for 20 percent of all infants in the province weighing less than three pounds.

The gynaecology services at Sunnybrook are designed to meet the needs of women throughout the stages of life, including pregnancy, menopause and beyond. Our gynaecologists specialize in compassionate care for a range of reproductive health and pelvic problems.

Pre-pregnancy assessment

Our preconception counseling and prenatal diagnosis clinic assesses the risk and outcomes of future pregnancies for your patients who have had previous complications in pregnancy or who have complicated medical conditions.

Examples include severe toxemia, Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), preterm labour, placental abruption or pre-existing medical conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, cardiac disease, insulin-dependent diabetes and advanced maternal age.

  • Childbearing families should be cared for together
  • Women and their families are partners in their care

Sunnybrook’s obstetricians use a model of 24-hour coverage so there is always a dedicated obstetrician covering the birthing unit. Patients will have their own physician for scheduled Caesarean sections during the day.

This can be a stressful time for women. Our specialized team has expertise in caring for women who may have a complex pregnancy. This may include those pregnant with multiples or who may have several other conditions such as diabetes, placenta previa and preterm rupture of membranes.

Sunnybrook's high-risk antenatal unit is an inpatient unit caring for women who require close monitoring around the clock.

We're also home to the Toronto Centre for Early Fetal Ultrasound, leading in detailed ultrasound imaging of pregnancies as early as 12 to 15 weeks to detect potential fetal conditions such as structural anomalies and to also detect chromosomal disorders, such as Down syndrome. We offer amniocentesis, CVS, and other procedures as well as fetal echocardiography services.

For patients expecting more than one baby, Sunnybrook is home to Canada's first specialized clinic for multiple births. The Centre for Multiple Pregnancy Care has a highly trained team of internationally renowned experts who care for twice as many twins as any other hospital in Ontario.

High-risk pregnancies present a significant potential for the delivery of infants requiring neonatal intensive care. The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Sunnybrook is one of three high-risk, regional neonatal nurseries serving the Central East Region of Ontario. Our neonatal health-care team provides highly specialized and integrated family-centered care to infants who are ill or premature and require intensive and advanced neonatal care. Our NICU is well known for its exceptional care of tiny infants, caring for babies born as early as 24 or 25 weeks gestation.
