Plantar Fasciitis

Introduction

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot problem. It is usually described as pain on the bottom or inside aspect of one or both heels. Typically, the pain is greatest with the first few steps in the morning or when going from a sitting to a standing position after a period of rest.

What is the plantar fascia?

The plantar fascia is a tissue on the bottom of the foot. It is attached to the heel bone (calcaneous) and extends forward towards the toes. It is responsible for maintaining the arch of the foot.

How does plantar fasciitis occur?

Plantar fasciitis usually occurs when part of this tissue is pulled away from the heel bone. This causes an inflammatory response, which then leads to pain. Plantar fasciitis may also occur at the midsole of the foot, but this is less common.
There is no one cause of plantar fasciitis. It results from factors such as:

  • Flat, pronated feet
  • High arched, rigid feet
  • Poor foot mechanics
  • Inappropriate/ill-fitting footwear
  • Increased weight
