Sunnybrook’s ambulatory electronic medical record accomplishes Canada Health Infoway certification

May 4, 2017

Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre announced today that SunnyCare, an ambulatory electronic medical record (aEMR) developed by Sunnybrook achieved Infoway’s aEMR certification.

“The certification process requires an applicant to undergo an assessment to demonstrate that their product meets a very specific set of standards set by Infoway Certification Services,” says Mark Nenadovic, Group Director, Certification Services, Canada Health Infoway. “We applaud Sunnybrook for meeting those standards and achieving Infoway J Class, Laboratory certification for their aEMR SunnyCare.”

In order to achieve certification, Sunnybrook underwent an assessment to ensure they complied with Infoway’s rigorous privacy, security and interoperability requirements. In February 2016, MyChart, Sunnybrook’s online personal health record (PHR) service, was also successful in achieving Infoway certification in the Consumer Health Application category.

“SunnyCare is a clinical workflow tool designed by clinicians for clinicians. The application offers the ability to manage a patient’s care in any setting from practically any device including their phone,” said Sam Marafioti, Vice President Corporate Strategy and Development and Chief Information Officer, Sunnybrook. “This certification gives us the confidence that the software is secure and will protect patient privacy and confidentiality. We’re proud of our teams for achieving this designation."

The SunnyCare aEMR is an extension of Sunnybrook’s own web-based clinician workflow platform called SunnyCare. It improves clinician efficiency, patient flow and continuity of care by:

  • Enabling integration with clinical systems at Sunnybrook
  • Ensuring clinician functions and patient information available on-demand and never duplicated
  • Including consult management, physician order entry, clinical documentation, medication reconciliation, medication administration, physician sign-out, and discharge summaries

Infoway Certification Services provide a process to certify trusted, standards-based health information solutions. It offers pre-implementation certification for the following technology classes:

  • Consumer Health Application
  • Consumer Health Platform
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Drug Information System
  • Electronic Medical Record
  • Immunization Registry
  • Client Registry
  • Provider Registry
