EnTICED Project

Enabling teamwork in critical care and the emergency department

The overall program goal is to create a sustainable best-practice, evidence-based toolkit useful to a broad range of front-line clinical teams. The toolkit will allow a clinical team, who are not experts in interprofessional care (IPC), to develop a customized intervention designed to improve the team's IPC and improve specific patient outcomes.

The EnTICED initiative specifically targets the gap between traditional educational activities and changing clinical practise. The EnTICED toolkit will:

  1. translate theories, best-practises and effectiveness evidence from education, social sciences and corporate domains into practical tools designed for implementation by non-experts in clinical practise settings;
  2. allow pre-existing health care teams to develop and customize an interprofessional education (IPE) intervention to diagnose and develop interprofessional (IP) competencies in their specific clinical setting;
  3. use co-creation and coaching models to incorporate the needs of the learners into the IP educational package;
  4. develop IPC role models and champions among front-line health caregivers; and
  5. generate new knowledge about successful strategies to advance IPC.

In keeping with the theory of interprofessionality (D'Amour & Oandasan 2005), which highlights that change must occur within practise settings at the same time as educational initiatives occur in academic institutions, it is recognized that the EnTICED toolkit is not sufficient to effect cultural change. However, a detailed, practical, portable and effective toolkit is a necessary component of a systematic approach that will enabling health care leaders to implement a sustained cultural change towards IPC in their institution.
