Ultrasound and lumbar puncture

Can ultrasound of the spine improve the reliability and safety of lumbar puncture?

This is an anatomic study using lumbar ultrasound in patients (nonpregnant) who are having a lumbar computed tomography (CT) scan. The purpose of the study is to accumulate a teaching library of normal/abnormal lumbar spines on ultrasound, which can be used as a diagnostic tool for placement of neuraxial blocks.
