Research & Clinical Trials
Much of our research examines cardiovascular outcomes, image-guided cardiovascular interventions, and automated blood pressure measurement. Collectively, we hold almost $59 million peer-reviewed funding as principal investigators and co-investigators. In partnership with other members of the Schulich Heart Program and the Sunnybrook Research Institute, the division obtained a major national peer-reviewed CFI grant, the Imaging Research Centre for Cardiovascular Intervention (IRCCI).
Our research is focused in two main areas:
- Image-guided cardiovascular interventions
Using various imaging modalities (x-ray, CT, ultrasound and MRI) to plan, monitor and/or assess cardiac procedures. This research activity includes ongoing research into the use of imaging in interventional cardiology, electrophysiology (ablation procedures, etc.) and minimally invasive procedures. - Outcome research
Achieving better patient management with more accurate characterization of risks/benefits, and quality improvement through monitoring of outcomes and other relevant feedback. This work includes the use of extensive information databases linking patient management to outcome. The outcomes research also includes investigations into the management of patients with hypertension with particular emphasis on the role of automated blood pressure measurements.
We enjoy significant achievements in research. Our members have many signficant awards including:
- Dr. Dennis Ko - CIHR new investigator award, 2008; Heart & Stroke Foundation Clinician Scientist salary award
- Dr. Brad Strauss - Reichmann Research Chair; co-leader of the CIHR Team in Occlusive Vascular Disease.
