Education Week: November 19 – 22, 2019

November 4, 2019

Sunnybrook is one of Canada’s premier academic health sciences centres. Our learners come from all over the world to study with our renowned faculty and become important members of our interprofessional, person-centred teams. That’s something to celebrate.
Join us on Education Week for food, prizes, knowledge and appreciation.

Patient Education Day: Hear from our Patients

Tuesday, November 19, 2019: 11:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.

How do our patients provide unique and valuable teaching to staff, physicians, students and even other patients? Hear from some of our patient teachers: learn their stories and how they use their experience to provide insight and teaching to improve the experience for others.

Paul Kocher is a volunteer patient advisor at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. His journey through Ontario’s health care system started 11 years ago when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis. Following a two-month stay in acute care at Sunnybrook, Paul spent one month at St. John’s Rehab.

Paul’s journey has motivated him to ‘give back’ to the institutions and people who both saved his life and restored his quality of life by volunteering in a number of areas to help improve Ontario’s health care system for future patients.

Peter Salloun assists the Holland Centre in conducting hip classes for patients facing total hip replacement. Having an artificial hip himself, his work with future patients helps take the mystery out of hip surgery.

Charlotte Schultz is a retired registered nurse and a three times cancer survivor. She has been involved as a patient advocate in multiple pan-Canadian health committees. Her passion is to help elevate care and funding for lymphedema in Ontario. She is a Director of the Lymphedema Association of Ontario.

Location: McLaughlin Auditorium
