We currently have a Regular Full-time opportunity for a Technology Analyst in the Sunnybrook Research Institute – Technology Transfer Office at our Bayview campus.

Hours of Work:

Weekdays: Days; 8 hrs; as per schedule

The Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI), the research arm of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre – a research hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto – is currently seeking a candidate for an Analyst position within the Technology Transfer Office.

As the research enterprise of a premier academic health sciences centre and one of Canada’s largest hospitals, SRI’s ground-breaking research changes the way patients are treated around the world. SRI is one of the fastest growing hospital-based research enterprises in Canada with well-established programs in basic and applied research, developing innovations in care for more than 1 million patients annually.

We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about helping research technology be commercialized. Of utmost importance is that you have a strong scientific background, with the ability to assess the value of technology and envision how it could be commercialized. You need to be comfortable conversing with university researchers and non-scientific staff on scientific and technical matters within the biological sciences. You will be responsible for evaluating and analyzing life science technologies, assisting in patent filings, and finding and engaging with potential commercial partners.

Summary of Duties:

  • Identify new (potential) intellectual property by meeting with scientists and clinicians, reviewing primary research publications, attending internal scientific talks
  • Evaluate life science invention disclosures for patentability and commercial potential
  • Facilitate the communication between patent attorneys and inventors during the application and prosecution of patents
  • Develop marketing materials for technologies/research in our portfolio (e.g. technology briefs, slide decks) and build industry networks for outreach and partnering purposes
  • Identify potential commercial applications and business partners for inventions
  • Perform and summarize market intelligence studies and competitor analysis for new or active disclosures
  • Assist in reviewing, drafting and negotiating the commercialization sections of various sponsored research and grant applications
  • Generate internal data for statistical input as needed by Director – Business Development or Manager - TTO
  • Be involved in licensing negotiations, and start up activities

Qualifications/Skills:

This is an entry level position for someone with a strong biological sciences background. It is well suited for a PhD graduate, Postdoc, MBiotech/MBA graduate (or related degree with strong biological sciences background), or someone with 2-3 years of industry or academic work experience in the biosciences space.

  • Advanced university degree in life sciences (MSc, PhD, MD or similar)
  • Highly organized and accountable for own work; strong integrity
  • Ability to understand scientific publications/concepts and interpret science to a nonscientist
  • Strong and diplomatic interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to multitask and work on multiple projects concurrently
  • Coachable and have ability to work effectively in a team setting, and independently with direction
  • Strong analytical, creative problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Ability to thrive in a challenging and fluid work environment, ability to be flexible and adaptable
