Phlebotomy Technician - Phlebotomy Services - Regular Part-Time  (222107)

We currently have a Regular Part-Time (0.5 FTE) opportunity for a Phlebotomy Technician in the Phlebotomy Services Unit at our Bayview and St.Johns Rehab Campus.

Hours of Work:

Weekday: Day, Evenings; 4hrs, 5hrs and 8hrs; As per schedule

Weekends: Day, Evenings; 4hrs, 5hrs and 8hrs; As per schedule. Statutory Holidays Required.

Summary of Duties

  • Performs venipuncture on inpatients and outpatients
  • Performs ECGs on inpatients and outpatients
  • Provides documentation review for patients requiring service
  • Facilitates procurement of miscellaneous specimens
  • Arranges for the transport of the specimens to the laboratory
  • Maintains required inventory and forms, maintains work areas
  • Collects and organizes documents as required
  • Provides assistance to address issues with patients, referring offices and internal departments
  • Practices in a safe manner, maintains a safe working environment and complies with IP&C practices and provides patient-centred care
  • Collects and documents workload statistics and files safety reports as required
  • Uses hospital information systems to access procedures
  • Participates in CQI initiatives and assists in training of staff


  • Successful completion of a Community College program for Medical Laboratory Assistants (must include Phlebotomy and ECG)
  • MLPAO (previously known as OSMT) certification required
  • CSMLS MLA certification an asset
  • Minimum one (1) year recent experience in venipuncture required
  • Hospital venipuncture experience will be an asset
  • Working knowledge of computers for requisition entry; experience with Sunquest Laboratory Information System will be an asset
  • Experience with electronic Positive Patient Identification (ePPID) such as Sunquest Collection Manager (CLM) will be an asset
  • Detail oriented and able to follow departmental procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and adjust to varying work assignments as needed, or independently, as required
  • Ability to work safely and accurately, follow directives from assigned Team Leader, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance, punctuality and attendance records
  • Demonstrated good communication skills and interpersonal skills
