Research Associate 1, Sunnybrook Research Institute

Temporary Full-time (1 year contract, possibility for renewal)

Reporting to the Chief, Department of Family & Community Medicine, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the Research Associate supports the research and education scholarship academic activities of the faculty and residents of the Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM) and Primary Care Research Unit (PCRU) at Sunnybrook.

The DFCM and PCRU is currently seeking a Temporary Full-Time Research Associate to support research and knowledge translation activities related to the broad area of primary care research. The role is situated with the Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI), the research arm of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto.

Summary of duties include (but are not limited to):

· Contribute to the conduct and reporting of qualitative and quantitative studies, including:

· Provide leadership and administrative support to inter-professional research and education scholarship teams, faculty, and medical residents in the Department of Family & Community Medicine its learner’s priority research fields using strong project management and research skills

· contribute to leadership within the PCRU via mentorship of Research Assistants and assist with internal/external stakeholder relationship management

· Participate in all stages of the research process, including:

· Project planning and protocol development

· Systematic literature reviews

· Preparation/editing research ethics applications and grant applications

· Participant scheduling, data collection/entry and database organization

· Mid-level data analysis/mixed methods/survey-based data analysis

· Draw conclusions for review and inclusion into final research reports

· Disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications/presentations

· Assist with the hiring and training of research assistants and volunteers

· Prepare and maintain curriculum vitae for faculty

· Schedule and coordinate appointments and meetings for faculty

· Participate in DFCM events and meetings


  • Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Psychology, or a related health field with strong methodological and statistical knowledge
  • 2 years+ of experience in health services research
  • Experience in academic literature reviews, research grant development and submission, and research ethics board submissions
  • Demonstrated involvement in research publications as an author
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities
  • Strong knowledge of PC platforms (MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe Acrobat) and data analysis software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, NVivo)
  • Experience with program evaluation and qualitative research an asset
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands and work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization skills and interpersonal skills
  • Effective oral and written English communication skills
  • Some flexibility to work between Monday to Friday, both in-person and online.

The Research Associate will be mentored and encouraged to promote primary care research. They will be provided with an on-site workspace at Sunnybrook (Bayview Campus) in the PCRU (with some remote work possible).
