Dedicated Coagulation Lab Technologist - Hematological Pathology (Coagulation) - Regular Full-Time (210279)

We currently have a Regular Full-Time opportunity for a Dedicated Coagulation Lab Technologist in the Hematological Pathology – Coagulation department at our Bayview Campus.

Hours of Work:

Weekdays: Days; 8hrs; As per schedule

On-Call Required and Statutory Holidays Required.

Summary of Duties

The dedicated technologist in coagulation will work under the general direction of a senior technologist, lab manager/designate and medical director for coagulation/designate. They must have a comprehensive working knowledge of the theory, methodologies, and equipment for the tests and procedures in the laboratory discipline of coagulation. They must ensure efficient and effective workflow, use resources appropriately, assist with improving processes, updating policies and procedures, and implementing change.

The technologist will work closely with the senior technologist in coagulation to plan, organize, and direct day-to-day technical operations to ensure timely, accurate, and reliable results. They will provide advanced technical and professional guidance to other technologists/technicians and clients as required and assist with new project set up as needed.

Responsibilities:

Work expectations may vary from time to time depending on the needs of workflow and projects however, the core responsibilities for this position are as listed below:

  • Performing analytic testing for all special coagulation assays.
  • Recognizing abnormal results and undertaking corrective action using predetermined protocols and comprehensive working knowledge in an independent manner.
  • Performing and reviewing quality control data and reports, recognizing unusual results, and reporting to the senior technologist.
  • Reviewing documentation of instrument maintenance/troubleshooting and temperature logs.
  • Testing external quality assurance (EQA) samples, submitting EQA data, investigating discordant
  • EQA results, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Organizing daily and weekly workflow.
  • Providing technical consultation to internal and external clients as needed.
  • Preparing standard operating procedure documentation and updating/ revising current standard operating procedures. 
  • Documenting workload statistics and filing safety reports as required.
  • Assisting with maintaining the inventory management system, ordering supplies and contacting suppliers.
  • Participating in the development, implementation, and coordination of the technologist training and an in-service continuing education program for both technical staff and medical residents.
  • Participating in development and evaluation of new methodologies and analysis of statistical data, as applicable.
  • Assisting with staff activities to enhance safe practice.
  • Participating in quality improvement and research projects, as applicable.

Qualification/Skills:

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist.
  • Current CMLTO membership in good standing.
  • 2 years Special Coagulation experience in a hospital setting required.
  • BSc Medical Laboratory Science preferred.
  • Knowledge of continuous quality improvement and total quality management principles required.
  • Knowledge of IQMH standards and regulations.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to apply adult education principles an asset.
  • Strong computer skills that include Word, Excel, and Power Point experience is required.
  • Detail oriented and able to follow departmental procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize work, multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member as well as independently, and adjust to varying work assignments as needed.
  • Ability to show initiative when needed, and take direction and feedback constructively.
  • Motivated to learn and pursue opportunities for continuous education.
