Research Assistant

The Sunnybrook Research Institute, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, is seeking an applicant to fulfill a temporary, full-time position as Research Assistant under the supervision of Dr. Marc Jeschke. The position will be available for a one -year contract with expectation for renewal based on performance.

Dr. Marc Jeschke is a Senior Scientist, division of Biological Sciences at Sunnybrook Research Institute, and the director of the Ross Tilley Burn Centre (RTBC). This exiting research project links basic science with translational research in our burn centre. Hence, the applicant has to have a strong interest in advancing science for burn patients.


Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician will perform routine and moderately complex laboratory functions and experiments regarding to a clinical trial project. Duties include:

  • Process and culture and biobank human specimen from burn patients for further analyses.
  • Account for biospecimen
  • Data entry for the biobank
  • Have effective communications working with clinicians, clinical coordinator, and research leaders
  • Compiling data from related and/or unrelated sources
  • Conduct a variety of experimental tasks using wet-lab laboratory techniques
  • Help develop and edit relevant documents and SOP for Health Canada
  • Characterize cells using flow cytometer
  • Culture cell lines and mammalian primary cells with high aseptic techniques
  • Develop, optimize and extract cells from skin tissue samples
  • Supporting the day-to-day operations of the laboratory
  • Give weekly presentations and updates regarding clinical trial project


  • At minimum, completion of a Master’s degree or equivalent in a health or science-related discipline
  • At minimum, 1 to 2 years of work experience in a laboratory setting in Academia and/or Industry
  • Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and multi-task. Ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Technical knowledge and skills to perform routine and standardized laboratory research techniques and procedures are required (e.g. media preparation, manual pipetting, preparation of samples for downstream experiments, nucleic acids extraction and evaluation)
  • Experienced in cell culture techniques and flow cytometry.
  • Strong understanding and interest in molecular biology and stem cell therapy
  • Competency in computer skills including data analysis software and developing high quality figures.
