We currently have a Regular Part-Time (0.5 FTE) opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Assistant in the Specimen Management Department at all campuses.

Hours of Work:

Weekdays: Days, Evenings, Nights; 8 hrs; As per schedule

Weekends: Days, Evenings, Nights; 8 hrs; As per schedule

On Call Required. Statutory Holidays Required.

Summary of Duties

The Medical laboratory Assistant provides support services to technical laboratories to ensure quality patient care. This includes specimen handling, routine technical procedures, SunQuest computer data entry, filing, front line customer service and doing phlebotomy and ECGs. The Medical Laboratory Assistant plays an integral role in the department through team collaboration with peers and management, supporting and assisting activities to enhance best practices for quality services and a safe working environment for all.

The MLA is responsible for: Receiving, sorting, labelling and distribution of specimens to work stations; updating patients’ information; filing and retrieving records; verifying and registering patient demographics. The MLA is also responsible for performing phlebotomy and ECG procedures at the Specimen Collection Centre.


  • Requires successful completion of Community College program for Medical Laboratory Technician
  • OSMT certification required
  • Proficient computer skills required
  • Customer service focus required
  • Detail oriented with quality assurance focus required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively and accurately
  • Work cooperatively in a team environment but also independently with limited supervision
