Prosthesis Care

Introduction

How to Care for your Prosthesis

  • Your socket should be cleaned daily to reduce the risk of skin conditions. The inside portion of the plastic socket should be cleansed with a solution of mild, non-detergent soap and warm water, rinsed and dried thoroughly. The best time to clean the socket is before you go to bed to allow it to dry thoroughly.
  • If you have leather parts on your prosthesis, these can be wiped with a damp sponge and should be dried immediately with a soft cloth. Do not rinse leather under running water as it will harm the product.
  • It is important to do regular inspections of your prosthesis to ensure no parts have come loose. If this occurs, you should immediately contact your Prosthetist.
  • Never oil, grease or introduce any foreign substances to any part of your prosthesis unless recommended by your Prosthetist
  • Never make any adjustments to your prosthesis yourself. If you require adjustment, you should contact your Prosthetist.
  • You should avoid getting the prosthesis wet. Although most prosthesis are water resistance, they are not waterproof. If you wish to shower or swim while wearing your prosthesis, waterproof shower and swim legs are available.
  • It is strongly recommended that routine follow ups are performed. Please consult with your prosthetist to determine the most suitable follow up plan for you.
