LEEP Procedure

What to expect after LEEP

You have just had a LEEP treatment on your cervix.  These are some common things you may experience:

  • A bloody, watery discharge for one to two weeks after the LEEP.  The amount may vary; light to heavy and the colour may be light red to pink.
  • A blackish discharge because of the medication put on your cervix for a few days.
  • You may experience some lumpy discharge as your cervix heals.
  • Spotting may occur for two to three weeks after your LEEP.

If at any time your discharge becomes bright red with clots and you are changing your maxi-pad every 1-2 hours, call the clinic at 416-480-6100 ext 6720, and ask to speak with the nurse. If the clinic is closed, go to your nearest emergency department.

With the exception of walking, which is fine, for two weeks please DO NOT:

  • Exercise
  • Lift weights
  • Ride a bicycle
  • Engage in yoga or Pilates

To prevent infection and excess discharge we recommend patients the following for four (4) weeks:

  • Do not use tampons, use only sanitary pads
  • Do not have intercourse
  • Do not douche
  • Do not use ASA (aspirin™), use only acetaminophen (Tylenol™) or ibuprofen (Advil™) for any discomfort, provided you are not allergic to these medications

Most people are able to return to work the same day.  This is a personal choice.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BOOK YOUR THREE-MONTH FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENT BEFORE LEAVING THE CLINIC.
