Sunnybrook physician receives organ and tissue donation award

October 3, 2018

Dr. Brian Cuthbertson, Chief, Department of Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook, has been recognized as a Hospital Donation Champion for embracing organ and tissue donation and leading culture change at the hospital.

Trillium Gift of Life Network, Ontario's organ and tissue donation agency, presented the award to just seven health care professionals across the province this year, including Dr. Cuthbertson.

“This award is important because we have an amazing team of people from all over the hospital who help us achieve success every day,” says Dr. Cuthbertson. “Sunnybrook set out to be the best in the province a few years ago, and we are making great strides in that direction.”

Sunnybrook has one of the highest donor rates of all GTA hospitals, in large part because 95% of eligible families are approached about considering organ and tissue donation.

“This award reflects the continued commitment of Dr. Cuthbertson and the team at Sunnybrook to implement donation best practices, and to offer families the opportunity to make a lifesaving choice,” says Ronnie Gavsie, President and CEO, Trillium Gift of Life Network. “The success of organ and tissue donation in Ontario relies on their hard work and dedication.”

One organ donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of up to 75 others through tissue donation. Visit beadonor.ca/sunnybrook to learn more.
