COVID-19 outbreak information

October 23, 2020

An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared in one of our care units after the identification of five in-patient cases.

An initial three cases linked to each other were identified through our regular surveillance on October 21, which triggered broader testing on the unit that identified two additional cases on October 22. At the present time, all patients are asymptomatic while four remain on the unit after one was discharged.

To limit further spread, the affected unit (C5) is closed to new patient admissions at the present time. Visitors are also restricted from entering the unit. All outbreak control measures are in place on the unit, including increased surveillance, testing and enhanced cleaning measures.

When two or more patients who are being cared for in a health-care facility for something other than COVID-19 test positive for the illness, it meets the definition of an outbreak as set out by public health.

Sunnybrook remains open, and clinics and procedures will continue as usual. The hospital is safe for patients and approved visitors/essential care partners.
