In the media: Dr. Sara Mitchell

September 9, 2021

Dr. Sara Mitchell, neurologist in the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program at Sunnybrook, has recently been highlighted in local and national news coverage.

She was featured in Toronto Life discussing how she has adapted to virtual care over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Mitchell specializes in patients with complex brain diseases. She and her colleagues developed educational tools to help patients and their caregivers with the change to virtual appointments.

“I’ve also had to adapt neurocognitive assessments to the virtual realm. We’ve used screen-sharing technologies to replace paper tests. Often, patients have trouble manoeuvring their cameras appropriately, and in those cases we collected verbal responses rather than written or motor ones,” she explains in the article.

On Global News Weekend, Dr. Mitchell shared insight on the benefits of social interaction on brain health and why having a supportive network of people in life who are “good listeners” may help build more cognitive resilience.

“There’s something about social stimulation that creates resilience for the neural cells,” Dr. Mitchell said on the show. “It also creates reinforcement of certain neural pathways, or different kind of circuits in the brain.”
