Veterans to be honoured at Maple Leafs game

At tonight's Toronto Maple Leafs game, four residents of the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre will be honoured at a pre-game, on-ice ceremony to mark Remembrance Day:


John Ferris

John Ferris

He joined The Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of 19. During the Second World War, he was first posted with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada. He later served in England with The Queen’s York Rangers, as a wireless operator air gunner on Wellington Bombers and Harvard aircraft.


Norman Short

Norman Short

Originally from Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Trois Rivieres, Quebec; he enlisted at the age of 19 in the Canadian Army. During the Second World War, he served with The Essex Scottish Regiment as a Motorcycle Dispatch Rider in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.


Gord Callaghan

Gord Callaghan

A young navy cadet during World War II, he joined The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada after the war at the age of 21. He served for twelve years in the Army Reserve. After basic training, he joined the Queen’s Own Rifles Bugle Band and became the Bugle Major, playing in numerous concerts and parades, and for dignitaries and royalty.


Alan Forster

Alan Forster

At the age of 16, he joined the Canadian Army with The Toronto Scottish Reserves. At 19, he served with the regiment in the 2nd Battalion in Canada, and then with the 1st Battalion as a machine gunner and rangefinder once overseas. He saw action in France - most notably the battle at St. Andre sur Orne, in Belgium and in Germany, and was part of the Liberation of Holland.
