Help train medical students

By Peters-Boyd Academy of Medicine  •  February 6, 2019

Join the Volunteer Patient Program

To get really good at what they do, medical students need to practise their interviewing and examination and clinical skills on real people. The Volunteer Patient Program gives first-year students the opportunity to rehearse these skills.

Volunteer patient recruitment

Within each unit of the curriculum in Yr.1 & 2, students learn how to take the appropriate medical history and how to conduct the relevant physical exam(s). Because of that, we aim to recruit volunteers who have a variety of health conditions (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, bowel disease, osteoporosis, epilepsy, thyroid conditions, asthma, etc.).

What to expect

A pair of first-year or second-year medical students will practise taking your medical history and perform a non-invasive medical exam under the direction of their tutor, a fully-licensed physician. Note: The session is not diagnostic in any way; student teams do not provide medical care or advice.

Registration

Volunteer Patient Program sessions run on Thursday and Friday mornings (9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon) throughout the academic year (September – May). You can volunteer once or more than once – whatever your schedule allows.

Honoraria

Volunteer patients receive a $25.00 honorarium for their participation at each session. This also includes a Sunnybrook parking pass for those volunteers who will be driving to the session - please park in Garage 1.
