MR-Linac receives regulatory certification from Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

July 23, 2019

The MR-Linac — Elekta Unity — has now received regulatory certification from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).

The Elekta Unity is the first machine in the world to combine radiation and high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and will let doctors at the Odette Cancer Centre target tumours and monitor their response to radiation with unprecedented precision, thanks to the machine’s real-time MRI guidance.

The CNSC certification means Sunnybrook is one step closer to using the device for clinical trials.

The Sunnybrook Research Ethics Board has approved the international registry known as the MOMENTUM study.

The study’s main goal will be to collect clinical and technical data from standard-of-care radiation treatments that will be used to demonstrate the capabilities of this new technology and its role in improving patient outcomes.

Sunnybrook requires some final additional approvals and licenses before opening up the machine to on-study patient treatments, which is expected within weeks.

Details about how to participate in MOMENTUM to follow soon.
