Congratulations to Janice Stewart, Odette Cancer Centre Operations Director, who has been awarded the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ACIO).
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the contributions of a CANO/ACIO nurse to the development of oncology nursing in Canada: a lasting contribution and a lasting legacy of impact. The award is provided to a CANO/ACIO nurse who has made significant outstanding contributions to CANO/ACIO, to oncology nursing and/or to cancer care in Canada during his/her professional career. Jan began her career at Princess Margaret Hospital in 1983 on an inpatient unit, and moved on to a clinical trials role, which she held for about 10 years. She was also the manager of the chemotherapy unit and finally the Director of Oncology at Princess Margaret.
Jan joined Sunnybrook as Operations Director, and is well known here and beyond as a clinical leader, tireless educator and strong patient advocate. She has made contributions at the local, provincial and national level, including participating in a number of reviews surrounding the improvement of systemic cancer therapy delivery programs within the British Columbia Cancer Agency (BCCA) and McGill University Health Centre, Oncology Programs.

Jan has been a strong voice for patients and families at the organizational, local, provincial and national levels. Jan started the first Patient and Family Advisory Council at the Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre back in 2016. She continues to chair that meeting monthly and ensures that the voice and decision making of patients and their families are well represented in all core initiatives.

She was on the frontline supporting her staff and ensuring measures were in place to oversee the safety of the cancer patients especially those with compromised immunity.
