Dr. Nicole Look Hong appointed to the Marion C. Soloway Chair in Breast Cancer Surgery

March 7, 2025

Sunnybrook is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nicole Look Hong to the Marion C. Soloway Chair in Breast Cancer Surgery, jointly shared by Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine. The Chair, established in 2019, supports advancement in breast cancer treatment and care at Sunnybrook for a five-year term.

“I’m honoured to be recognized with the Marion C. Soloway Chair in Breast Cancer Surgery,” says Dr. Look Hong, a surgical oncologist and associate scientist in the Odette Cancer Program at Sunnybrook. “The generous support from this Chair will enable me to expand my vision of collaborative research and education for the benefit of our patients, and lead by example for the next generation of physicians and scientists.”

Dr. Look Hong’s work focuses on new techniques for tumour removal in breast cancer, and the improvement of cancer care quality and efficiency. Dr. Look Hong’s collaborative research led to the development of MOLLI, a wire-free and radiation-free technology that works like a stud finder, enabling surgeons to locate breast cancer lesions with precision and accuracy. In 2022, TIME Magazine named the device as one of the best inventions of the year.

The flagship device led to the founding of MOLLI Surgical, an SRI spin-off company, which was acquired by Stryker in 2024.

“I believe that collaborative working relationships in the breast diagnostic family are at the core of cancer care at Sunnybrook,” adds Dr. Look Hong, who is also an associate professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. “Through this Chair, I’m looking forward to finding innovative ways to advance the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes and a more effective and collaborative health system.”

The Marion C. Soloway Chair in Breast Cancer Surgery is the namesake of Marion Soloway, who recently passed away in February 2025. Marion was a former breast cancer patient at Sunnybrook and a strong advocate for rapid diagnostics services, leading to the establishment of the Marion C. Soloway Breast Rapid Diagnostic Unit at Sunnybrook in 2011.

The Marion C. Soloway Chair in Breast Cancer Surgery is made possible through the generous support of Gerald and Marion Soloway, longstanding supporters of breast cancer treatment at Sunnybrook.
