Congratulations Dr. Samira Mubareka

May 20, 2020

Congratulations to Dr. Samira Mubareka, infectious diseases physician, virologist, and Sunnybrook Research Institute scientist, who was included on a new Canadian Science and Technology Museum (Ingenium) poster that celebrates women in science who have contributed to Canada’s fight against COVID-19.

“Women are on the frontline of Canada’s medical response to COVID-19,” the poster reads. “Ingenium celebrates and acknowledges the contributions, endless efforts, and steadfast direction of healthcare workers, researchers, and medical officials.”

The poster was developed for the museum’s Women In STEM initiative.

In early March, Dr. Mubareka and colleagues received a grant to develop genome sequencing for the virus. Later that month, Dr. Mubareka was part of a team who isolated the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

In April, a $1 million investment allowed Sunnybrook to establish the Sunnybrook Translational Research Group for Emerging and Respiratory Viruses (SERV). Under Dr. Mubareka’s leadership, SERV's work will focus on three crucial streams of research: vaccines and therapeutics, virus biology and transmission prevention.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mubareka on receiving this honour by the Canadian Science and Technology Museum.
