Research Summary:
Over the past several years Dr. Okun has been interested in improving access to high quality, standardized and accessible care in the first trimester of pregnancy. Technology and advancements have shown us that certain conditions can be screened for effectively and non-invasively, and opportunities exist to apply interventions to improve perinatal and long term maternal and child outcomes if applied early in pregnancy. Her interest is in bringing those evidence-based screening and prevention practices to pregnant Ontarians, particularly including those equity deserving populations.
In addition, she is interested in bringing subspecialty maternal fetal medicine education to global low middle income areas via curricula that train in that center primarily; building infrastructure as subspecialists are trained.
