The purpose of this course is to provide a foundation of bedside ultrasound skills useful for the resuscitation of critically ill patients. Our ultrasound courses are taught by fellowship-trained leaders in emergency point-of-care ultrasound that teach on an international level.

    Course Overview and Design

    This course focuses on how to use ultrasound for the resuscitation of critically ill medical and trauma patients. There is a mix of lectures, videos, hands-on practice with ultrasound machines and live models, and simulation. There is a focus on ensuring all participants maximize the amount of hands-on scanning practice during the course.

    The topics include using ultrasound for:

    • Abdominal free fluid
    • Volume status (IVC)
    • Pericardial effusions (basic and advanced views)
    • Pneumothorax
    • Hemothorax
    • Other advanced applications

    Intended Audience

    This course is appropriate for any experience level with ultrasound from novice to advanced. This course is appropriate for any health care practitioner (physicians, nurses, paramedics, physician assistants) who wants to learn how to use ultrasound to help with patient care.

    • A course completion certificate is issued upon completion of the course

    CME Credit

    This course qualifies for 3 hours of Mainpro-M2 credits (College of Family Physicians) or 3 hours of Mainport Section 1 Small Group Session (RCPSC) CME credits.

    Mainpro+ Credits (CFPC)
    Although this program has not been formally reviewed and approved by the CFPC, participants may claim 1 credit per hour of participation as Non-Certified Group Learning in Mainpro+. For more details, visit the College of Family Physicians of Canada website or Heart & Stroke Foundation.

    1315 – Abdominal Free fluid and IVC volume status lecture
    1330 – Introduction to ultrasound machine basics
    1335 – Abdominal and IVC ultrasound scanning
    1415 – Basic and Advanced Cardiac ultrasound lecture
    1435 – Basic and Advanced Cardiac ultrasound scanning
    1515 – Thoracic ultrasound lecture (pneumotharax, interstitial edema, contusions, pleural effusions, hemothorax)
    1535 – Thoracic ultrasound scanning
    1615 – Advanced applications and review lecture

    No prior ultrasound experience is necessary. However, the course is clinically focused and a solid background of clinical experience in a health-care setting is highly recommended.

    • 1000 – 1115 BREAK
    • 1115 – 1130 Pneumothorax lecture
    • 1130 – 1200 Scanning - Pneumothorax
    • 1200 – 1245 LUNCH 
    • 1245 – 1315 Advanced cardiac (PSL, PSS, A4C) lecture
    • 1315 – 1400 Scanning - advanced cardiac
    • 1400 – 1415 BREAK
    • 1415 – 1445 Abdomen and pleural fluid lectures
    • 1445 – 1530 Scanning - abdo and pleural fluid
    • 1530 - 1545 Vascular access (central line, peripheral lines) lecture
    • 1545 - 1700 Scanning - vascuar access and simulation cases
