Spotlight on
Dr. Juan Carlos Zúñiga-Pflücker
Dr. Juan Carlos Zúñiga-Pflücker is a senior scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute and chair of the department of immunology at the University of Toronto. He developed a method to grow T cells in a Petri dish using embryonic stem cells, a method used by hundreds of labs. He studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms governing the immune system. In particular, he is trying to understand how, in response to molecular signals, stem cells develop into T cells. In 2012, the federal government renewed his Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Developmental Immunology. The award honours researchers who are world leaders in their fields.
