Research Summary:

SuDDICU study

Dr. Cuthbertson is the principal investigator for the SuDDICU (selective decontamination of the digestive tract in the intensive care unit) collaboration. This is a collaboration of 36 of the world's leading researchers trying to understand the role of selective decontamination of the digestive tract in the intensive care unit (ICU). We have completed the first two stages (meta-analysis and barriers to implementation) and are now seeking funding to conduct a large-cluster randomized controlled trial of selective decontamination of the digestive tract in ICU practice around the world.

METS study

Dr. Cuthbertson is the principal investigator for the measurement of exercise tolerance before surgery (METS) study group. This is a collaboration of 25 leading anesthesia and critical care researchers from the U.K., Canada and Australia that is investigating the role of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in major elective surgery. The group has been awarded $2 million from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Heart and Stroke Foundation, U.K. Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Australian Royal College of Anaesthetists to undertake this study. We have now almost completed study recruitment.

ICaRuS study

Dr. Cuthbertson is the principal investigator of an international Delphi study investigating the barriers to implementation of rehabilitation strategies in critical care. This study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in 2013. This study has completed recruitment and is in the analysis stage.
