Global Trends in Health Systems Innovation

Thursday, September 07, 2017 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Location: Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Lecture Theatre M6-502

Speaker: Dr. Anne Snowdon, Chair, World Health Innovation Network, Scientific Director & CEO, SCAN Health

Abstract: The Canadian life sciences sector makes significant contributions to the Canadian innovation economy, employing highly skilled workers and creating technologies that improve healthcare delivery and patient care in Canada and internationally.

Canada has the key ingredients for sustaining a thriving healthcare innovation ecosystem, including highly educated population, generous R&D tax credits and an innovation network comprised of world-class research facilities, academic institutions, and private companies, all of which are backed up by a supportive government. Despite these remarkable enablers, Canada remains highly dependent on importing healthcare technologies to meet the growing needs of our own healthcare system.

In this lecture, Dr. Snowdon will discuss (i) innovation across global health systems, (ii) enablers of healthcare innovation in Canada, (iii) challenges to the scaling up of innovations that improve services and outcomes for patients, (iv) areas of innovation in Canada that have the potential to reduce growth in healthcare spending while improving the quality and accessibility of care, and (v) the role of industry, government, academia and other health system stakeholders in contributing to Canada’s healthcare innovation sector.
