About the Centre for Youth Bipolar Disorder

What we do:

Provide comprehensive specialized assessments to adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, who are experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder, or who are offspring of a biological parent with bipolar disorder.

What we hope to accomplish:

To improve outcomes for teenagers with bipolar disorder through cutting-edge research, treatment, education, and advocacy.

Research focus:

  • To identify and validate biological markers that can inform the assessment and treatment of adolescents with bipolar disorder
  • To uncover the factors that link bipolar disorder and cardiovascular disease among adolescents who are at comparatively early stages of illness versus adults
  • To gain knowledge regarding the prediction of side-effects

Services offered:

  • Medication management
  • Consultations
  • Second opinion evaluations
  • Referrals for:
    • Psychoeducation
    • Individual therapy - supportive, CBT
    • Family therapy

Referral process:

A referral can be made by a family doctor, pediatrician, or psychiatrist using the youth psychiatry referral form. The referring physician should fax the completed form to Denise Hayes at 416-480-6818.
