Checklists

It is helpful to have your bags packed and baby’s clothes prepared ahead of time. You may want to pack a smaller bag for your labour and a larger one for your hospital stay.

For labour

In addition to what you have already packed for your hospital stay, we suggest the following:

  • Identification and Health Card
  • Lip Balm
  • Elastic for long hair
  • Glasses for women that wear contacts
  • Music
  • Focus point - photos of family, friends, and pets
  • Comforter/pillows (bright colours or patterns)
  • Large towel
  • Massage lotion/oil (unscented)
  • Ice pack, hot water bottle, tennis balls for massaging back pains
  • Lollipops or hard candy, popsicles or your favourite clear beverages

For your partner:

  • Change for vending machines
  • Food or drinks (each room has a fridge)
  • Comfortable clothing and PJs
  • Slippers or comfortable shoes to wear
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • An extra pillow and blanket
  • Camera
  • Any medication you may need
  • Bathing suit – if using the tub with mom to help in labour
  • List of people to notify

For Mom's hospital stay

Clothing:

  • 1 housecoat and slippers with rubber soles
  • 1-2 nightgowns, preferably front opening for nursing
  • Underwear, bras, socks (no underwire in bras)
  • Comfortable clothing for daytime (such as sweatpants and t-shirt) - most women like to dress in day clothes rather than wearing PJs all day
  • Comfortable shoes (preferably slip-on or no laces)

Toiletries:

  • Soap, shampoo, and Kleenex
  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hair brush
  • Hair elastics
  • Unscented lotions
  • Sanitary pads (optional)

Pastimes:

  • Laptops, iPads, or iPods
  • Chargers for electronic devices (labeled with name and phone number)

For baby's hospital stay

  • Car Seat
  • Undershirt

  • Sleepers or nightgown
  • Receiving blankets

Hospital-supplied bag

As a convenience to families, we offer a pre-packaged kit of essentials for purchase, priced below retail cost. The hospital-supplied bag costs $30, and is charged to your hospital account. You can opt not to purchase the package or buy more supplies as needed.

The hospital-supplied bag includes:

  • Three large peri-pads
  • One package (18) small peri-pads
  • Plastic drinking cup
  • Pen
  • Peri-bottle
  • Mesh underwear
  • Baby diapers (one package of 20)
  • Disposable wipes for cleaning

  • Hat for baby to go home in
  • The First 24hrs information package for mom and baby

Ask your nurse about MyRoo, a garment to hold  your baby securly during skin-to-skin time. MyRoo is available for purchase from the M-5 nursing station.

What to pack in your hospital bag for baby

Clothes

  • Cotton “onesies”: 5 – 6
  • Diapers: 2 or 3 dozen cloth or disposable (newborn size)
  • Sleepers: 6 – 8
  • Booties or socks: 6 pairs
  • Hats for outside
  • Snowsuit (if winter)
  • Warm blanket and receiving blankets

  • Wash and double rinse all clothes for your baby before use.
  • Babies grow very quickly, be sure to buy clothes in the 3 to 6 month size (rather than newborn).

Supplies

The hospital-supplied "must haves" bag costs $30 and includes:
Large and small peri-pads, plastic drinking cup, pen, peri-bottle, mesh underwear, baby diapers (one package of 20), disposable wipes and a baby hat

If you opt to not purchase the package, please bring two dozen diapers (newborn size)
