The academic mandate of the Department of Anesthesia at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre includes teaching at all levels of training as well as both basic and evidence-based clinical research and research in education.

Anesthesia services are provided at all three campuses, Sunnybrook campus, Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centre and Women's College Hospital. Clincial anesthesia includes services to all surgical specialities, with exception of transplant and pediatric surgery. There is a major concentration in trauma and cardiac surgery at the Sunnybrook campus, major joint replacement surgery at the Holland Centre and obstetrical anesthesia at Women’s College Hospital.
  
There are also dedicated acute pain services at all three campuses and chronic pain clinics located at the Sunnybrook campus.

Academic research includes basic science research in neural mechanisms of anesthesia, synaptic mechanisms of pain sensation, clinical evidence based research in obstetrical anesthesia, acute pain management, and simulation research involving education and team performance.

The Department  of Anesthesia offers clinical and/or research fellowship positions in cardiac, regional and general anesthesia, medical simulation, chronic pain, and obstetrical anesthesia.
