Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, will be facilitating workshops and providing simulated sessions on personal protection principles for the management of a patient with Ebola.

This program is linked to the broader Ebola Virus Disease training strategy that aligns with the directives issued by the Chief Medical Officer of Health of Ontario.

Personal protection principles for frontline healthcare workers – Ebola workshop and simulation sessions (1-day)

The objective for this this 1-day workshop is for participants to achieve awareness of principles and technical skills on the safe use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and systems, including pre-donning, donning, doffing, and self-decontamination.

Who should attend?

Ebola screening hospitals and paramedic services for Ebola may invite 1 or 2 approved participants per organization.

Location and logistics

  • Please bring your personal protective equipment.
    If you do not have personal protective equipment please note within registration.
  • Please join us at the Emergency Medical Assistance Team’s warehouse in Etobicoke.
    Directions to be provided in workshop confirmation email.
  • Payment – Respective organizations will be responsible for arranging and covering costs associated with travel, accommodation, etc.
  • Lunch will be provided.

Course outline

8:00  8:15 Welcome and schedule

8:15  9:15 Group sharing – personal protective equipment and systems: Identifying and mitigating risks and failures
9:15  9:30 Divide participants into Groups A and B
9:30  11:30 Technical skill teaching development and demonstration

Group A will perform the technical skills of pre-donning, donning, doffing and the self-decontamination process for both basic and advanced PPE. The learner will be partnered with an observer and a trained safety leader leveraging respective decision-support tools.



Group B while donned in PPE, will perform progressive role-based workplace simulation circuits that may include:

  1. Screening for/Assessing the need for Ebola testing 

  2. Temporary management of the person under investigation 

  3. Transfer of a person under investigation
  4. Doffing, decontamination and waste management


11:30 – 12:00 Group A and B will have separate hotwash debriefs
12:00 – 12:45 Lunch will be provided
12:45 – 15:00 Groups A and B to switch technical skills stations and perform new activities

15:00 – 15:30 Group A and B will have separate hotwash debriefs 


15:30 – 15:45 Workshop evaluations
