Breast Cancer

The pink breast cancer ribbon

Sunnybrook's unique focus on women's health across its programs lends strength to research and care of patients including those with breast cancer - a top priority for Sunnybrook. Each year, more than 2,000 new patients with breast diseases are seen at OCC for surgical consultation, systemic treatment (chemotherapy and/or hormone therapy), or radiation therapy. OCC is home to Canada's first patient-centred, multidisciplinary clinic for the management of locally advanced breast cancer and inflammatory breast cancer. Individuals and institutions across the country rely on the expertise in breast cancer found here.

Sunnybrook is constructing a new Breast Cancer Research Centre (BCRC) that will provide the necessary space to meet our clinical needs and the projected increased needs of the breast program as the incidence of breast cancer continues to rise. Multidisciplinary clinics in the BCRC enables the entire team of biologists, physicists, oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, engineers, pathologists and epidemiologists - to work together even more closely. The new space also includes Diagnostic Imaging allowing women to have timely access to state-of-the-art breast imaging, and expanded research space for breast clinical trials, imaging research, innovative treatments, molecular pathology and outcomes research. The Breast Cancer Research Centre will represent a national centre of excellence that will optimize the care of women with breast cancer and improve the treatment of breast cancer through its research scientists and dynamic research programs.
