August 1 is Emancipation Day.
This marks the day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect across the British Empire. Black and Indigenous Peoples were once enslaved in the land that is now Canada. This date reminds us of the strength and resilience of Black and Indigenous Peoples who resisted enslavement and fought for freedom. Their courage helped lay the foundation for the diverse society we strive for today; this commemoration is not just about history – it is also a call to action.
You’re invited to reflect, learn, and engage in the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination.
Music! Food Trucks! Art!
EVERYONE IS WELCOME
