Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation physicians (called physiatrists) are nerve, muscle, and bone experts who treat injuries or illnesses that affect how you move. The physiatrist’s approach to patient care looks at the whole person, not just one symptom or condition, to help the patient participate in life as fully and independently as possible. Physiatrists do not perform surgery.
Consider seeing a physiatrist if:
- You had an accident or you have an injury that has left you with pain or limited function
- You have an illness or had treatment for an illness that has diminished your energy or ability to move easily
- You're recovering from the effects of a stroke or other problems related to nerve damage
- You have chronic pain from arthritis, a repetitive stress injury, or back problems
- You have a chronic condition, nerve or muscle disorder that limits your function or causes pain
Making an appointment
A family physician or specialist must submit a referral to see a physiatrist. Patients must follow-up with their family physician or specialist regarding their appointment.
Referring a patient
Please fax the referral to general physiatry at 416-480-6885. We will contact the referring physician's office with the patient's appointment date and time.
