To obtain your ACLS certificate, the Heart & Stroke Foundation requires a valid Heart & Stroke BLS course completion card taken within the past 12 months. If you do not have a current Heart & Stroke BLS card, please register for our combination courses (BLS+ACLS) where you can obtain your BLS certification on the same day as your ACLS course.

Course Overview and Design

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support for Experienced Providers (ACLS-EP) is a NEW 1-day ACLS renewal program designed primarily for seasoned healthcare providers who manage complex cardiovascular, respiratory, and other emergencies and need to renew their ACLS course completion requirements.

The ACLS-EP Course emphasizes a systematic approach to patient care, critical thinking skills and critical decision-making skills. Through didactic instruction and active participation in case-based scenarios, learners will enhance their skills in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary prearrest, arrest, and postarrest patients.

Topics include: hypothermia, anaphylaxis, myocardial infarction, asthma, toxicology, metabolic disorders, drowning, stroke, electrical injury, and obstetrical arrest.

Intended Audience

This course is designed for seasoned ACLS providers with experience and comfort managing patients in cardiac arrest and in resuscitation scenarios. Physicians, paramedics, and emergency department or critical care nurses are encouraged to attend.

ACLS-EP Course Prerequisites

  1. Must have a current Heart & Stroke Foundation BLS Provider certification- taken within the past 12 months
    We offer same day BLS+PALS combo courses.  If you do not have a valid Heart & Stroke BLS, sign up for same day BLS.  BLS offered at ACLS course is essentially a renewal course.  Heart & Stroke therefore requires you to complete the BLS Renewal Challenge prior to in-class BLS portion.Visit Heart & Stroke for more information (opens in a new window).
  2. Must have a current Heart and Stroke Foundation ACLS provider certification (a grace period of 3 months post-expiry is accepted)
  3. Complete the online ACLS EP Entrance Exam (passing score = 84%)

Course Completion Card

  • Course completion card is issued by Heart & Stroke Foundation
  • Completion card expires two years from date of issue
  • Completion card is accessible by logging onto your student account on Heart & Stroke portal

CME Credits

Mainpro+ Credits (CFPC)
Although this program has not been formally reviewed and approved by the CFPC, participants may claim 1 credit per hour of participation as Non-Certified Group Learning in Mainpro+. For more details, visit the College of Family Physicians of Canada website or Heart & Stroke Foundation.

MAINPORT Credits (RCPSC)
Participants can claim 2 credits per hour under Section 2 of the MOC Programs as “Traineeships”. For more details, visit the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Mainport website.
