Infant Formulas and High-Calorie Recipes: Resource Handbook

Preterm infants are often discharged home from the NICU requiring high calorie formula preparations in order to support their high nutritional needs. Based on the Registered Dietitian assessment of an infant’s growth, feed tolerance and oral intake volumes, parents are instructed and discharged home with the appropriate calorie concentration recipe. Each calculated high calorie recipe is dependent on the type of formula being used, as many have different nutritional profiles, varying scoop sizes and powder mass.

This handbook, compiled and revised by Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and current as of June 2023, aims to provide a detailed reference guide for commercially available formula products for use by practitioners when calculating high calorie recipes. It provides detailed information about each formula, including its indications for use, available formats, relevant nutrition information, scoop and displacement information, McKesson ordering information, eligibility for ODB/OHIP+ coverage and high calorie recipes for preparation of high calorie breastmilk or formula recipes.
