Education & Training

We have a strong commitment to teaching and offer training programs for all academic levels in Medicine, with exposure to both ambulatory and acute care respirology. With a clinical focus on thromboembolism, lung cancer, sleep disordered breathing, and respiratory complications of neuromuscular disease, the program is able to offer a vast array of clinical experiences valuable at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level of training.

All of our respirologists have appointments at the University Of Toronto Faculty Of Medicine. We are fortunate to have some of the most highly rated and award winning educators in the Division.

Undergraduate Education

We welcome electives from the University of Toronto as well as from other medical schools. Electives are a minimum of three weeks and provide exposure to both general Respirology and subspecialty clinics while also providing an opportunity for inpatient consults and observation of procedures such as thoracentesis and bronchoscopies. While getting extensive clinical exposure, the student will also be provided with several educational rounds and teaching sessions during their time here.

Unfortunately, we are unable to grant requests for observerships at this time.

For further information please contact our Administrative Assisitant, Ms. Alison Fairclough: alison.fairclough@sunnybrook.ca.

Post Graduate Education

The Respirology program is a core teaching site for residents rotating through Anaesthesia and Internal Medicine as well as subspecialty residents rotating through Respirology. The program also accepts residents from the University of Toronto and other Postgraduate training programs for minimum three week electives.

The rotation provides a solid ambulatory program with unique exposure to thromboembolism, sleep disordered breathing and respiratory complications in both neuromuscular disease and cancer patients. Residents also spend time as part of the inpatient consult service where they conduct and review Respirology consults with attending staff. Residents are given training in ultrasound guided thoracentesis and bronchoscopy with fluoroscopic guided biopsy and transbronchial needle aspiration.

For further information regarding electives please contact our Administrative Assisitant, Ms. Alison Fairclough: alison.fairclough@sunnybrook.ca
