Specialized Geriatric Services

Sunnybrook has a distinguished history of caring for the elderly and today that commitment continues throughout the hospital and in every primary care program. Seniors are the fastest growing population and the greatest consumers of health care services in Ontario. In order to meet the growing challenge of our aging population, in 2008 Sunnybrook identified senior-friendly care as a strategic priority.

Sunnybrook's Specialized Geriatric Services are leading initiatives dedicated to meeting the expanding impact of our aging population. These services are offered through the emergency department, in-patient units, outpatient clinics and in the community for the elderly. Frail seniors with complex health problems have unique needs and present specific challenges for accurate diagnosis and assessment.

Sunnybrook is a member of the Regional Geriatric Program of Toronto (RGP). The network encourages the development of specialized geriatric services throughout the region, promotes best practices and supports inter-organizational collaboration and health services integration in order to achieve better health outcomes for frail seniors. The network links primary care physicians, hospitals, community health professionals and others. Learn more about the RGP »

Motions of recovery

Keeping healthy means keeping active, especially for seniors. In hospital, patients who are active recover more quickly and return home faster. Learn more about taking the first steps to recovery.
