Hand Surgery

The hand surgery clinic, headed by Dr. Paul Binhammer, is located in M-wing on the first floor within the Plastic Surgery Clinics at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

Appointments can be made by calling Dr. Binhammer's office at 416-480-6731. Physicians can fax referrals to 416-480-6757. Dr Binhammer is also a consultant to the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board, and appointments for this clinic can be made by sending a request to the WSIB.

About Dr. Binhammer

Teaching

Dr. Binhammer is involved in the daily teaching of residents and medical students at the University of Toronto. Dr. Binhammer has teaching rounds every Monday morning. There are other teaching sessions for the residents including journal club, seminars and courses.

Clinical Interest

Dr. Binhammer's clinical interest is in hand, wrist and microvascular surgery. His interest in hand and wrist surgery includes patients with arthritis, congenital differences, cerebral palsy, Dupuytren's, spinal cord injuries, traumatic injuries, tumours and other problems.

Training

After completing his training as a plastic surgery resident at the University of Toronto, Dr. Binhammer then spent a further year and a half training in hand surgery studying in Strasbourg, France with Dr. Guy Foucher, and in Salt Lake City with Dr. Graham Lister, both international experts in hand surgery.

Research

Dr. Binhammer's research interest is in outcome studies. Simply put, he is interested in determining how patients perceive the problems with their hands. He is actively developing simple methods to measure patients' concerns and to determine the impact of treatment. Collaborating with other researchers, Dr. Binhammer develops questionnaires to investigate patients' concerns with regards to injuires and treatment. In particular, he is involved in studies related to craniofacial injuries with Drs Antonyshyn and Fialkov.
