Education

In partnership with the University of Toronto's faculty of medicine as well as its faculty of nursing, our academic physicians and nurses take great pride in having Sunnybrook serve as a main training site for medical and nursing trainees.

Medical students

Given our expertise in communication and pain/symptom management, members of our team routinely participate in educating medical students on the basics of doctor-patient relationships. Elements of palliative care are a key part of the undergraduate curriculum and several of our team participate in the development and implementation of innovative palliative care educational experiences.

Postgraduate medical trainees

One of the main objectives of our team's educational strategy is to contribute to the development of specific palliative care competencies for physicians in various training programs. A palliative care educational experience is a mandatory component in the training of future family physicians, medical oncologists and psychiatrists. Other specialist trainees like internal medicine physicians and radiation oncologists have the opportunity to spend elective time with our team.

Palliative medicine residency

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Odette Cancer Centre are two of the primary training sites for the University of Toronto palliative medicine residency training program. The residency program is conjointly accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons; therefore, physicians from a wide variety of disciplines can opt to complete this one-year program to acquire advanced skills in palliative medicine.

Advanced practice nursing

Our team is also strongly committed to supporting the education of nurses at all levels of training. We serve as a preceptor site for nurses pursuing an advanced practice nurse (APN) designation in palliative care.
