First aid for burn injuries

If your clothing catches fire:

  • STOP: don't run
  • DROP: to the ground
  • ROLL: to put the fire out

If a burn occurs: COOL

  • Immediately pour cool water - NOT ice - on the burn
  • Cover the burn with a clean towel/sheet to keep the patient warm and seek medical attention
  • Don't use ointments, sprays, first aid creams or butter

Electrical burns

Rescue:
If the person is being held by the source of the electrical power, turn the power off by removing the fuse for this circuit at the fuse box or by switching the circuit breaker to "OFF" OR before attempting rescue, use a nonconductive item (such as a wooden broom handle) to move the power source away from the patient.

Stop the burning process:
If the clothing has caught fire, use low-pressure water to put out the flames OR smother the flames with a heavy blanket.

General first aid principles

  • Provide first aid: assist with breathing. Use CPR if necessary. Stop bleeding. Prevent further injury.
  • Keep the patient warm by wrapping in a sheet and a blanket.
  • Stay with the patient and provide emotional support
  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
