Sunnybrook’s first trimester anatomy clinic is a specialized clinic that provides earlier screening and diagnosis for pregnant individuals with specific risk factors. The clinic offers first trimester imaging, genetic and other diagnostic investigations between 12 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, at the same time of routine first trimester screening.

About us and our care

You may be wondering what’s ahead if you’re referred to our clinic. At your appointment, you’ll meet an expert sonographer and a maternal-fetal medicine specialist or MFM (a high-risk obstetrician). You may also meet a fetal cardiologist and genetics counsellor.

We will perform an ultrasound exam and you may have a fetal echocardiogram at the same appointment. After this, you will have a consultation with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist to review the findings. You don’t have to do anything special before your appointment, please eat and drink as you would normally.

You will still have your regular 18 to 20 week anatomy scan or fetal echo exam, as well as regular ultrasound appointments during pregnancy.
