Sunnybrook Hospitalist Fellowship Program

Introduction

The Sunnybrook Hospitalist Fellowship is for physicians who have completed training in family medicine or internal medicine, and who wish to acquire additional expertise and experience in managing complex medical inpatients. Fellows will gain competencies in areas such as management of common acute medical conditions, bedside procedural skills, health system navigation, quality improvement and patient safety, communication skills and teamwork. In addition to a focus on complex medical inpatients, our program offers the unique opportunity to work with specialized patient populations such as oncology, pre and perioperative, geriatrics and neurology.

Fellows will work as a member of a clinical team that provides a full breath of longitudinal hospital-based care to medical patients, and includes emergency evaluation and management, critical care, general medical care, and transitional care. A close working relationship exists with members of virtually all medical and surgical subspecialties which complements the comprehensive educational experience. This allows our graduates to meet the demands of the growing roles of Canadian hospitalists in co-managing hospitalized patients.

Opportunities are also provided for clinical electives and these typically include opportunities to further develop expertise in critical care, emergency medical care and knowledge of various medical disciplines with particular emphasis on geriatric medicine, stroke care and management of post-operative orthopedic patients. Electives are also available to our candidates to enhance their primary care skills and knowledge and to work in community hospitals. Academic activities include daily seminar and internal medicine rounds program which is targeted specifically to the educational needs of hospitalists. Fellows will also learn quality improvement techniques applicable to hospital-based clinical practice.

Our program offers a one year fellowship, based at Sunnybrook. There are 14 available positions per year. Fellowships commonly begin in January and July but starting dates may vary depending on the availability of vacant positions.
