Birthing Unit

We provide supportive care for women during their labour and birth and we deliver approximately 4,000 babies each year. Women with low-risk pregnancies and deliveries will be admitted to a family-friendly birthing suite.

Sunnybrook's obstetricians use a model of 24-hour coverage so there is always a dedicated obstetrician covering the birthing unit. Patients will have their own physician for scheduled Caesarean sections during the day.

Visitor information

If you are experiencing any illness, please do not visit the unit

  • Partners are encouraged to accompany labouring mothers and are not considered visitors
  • One additional support person, such as a doula, is allowed join the labouring mom and partner, and is also not considered a visitor, however his or her presence must be discussed with the labouring mother’s caregiver (nurse, physician or midwife) beforehand
  • Having more than two people in the delivery room at a time is decision made by the parents AND the health-care team
  • The waiting room beside the triage room is for labouring moms, partners and support persons, NOT general visitors

Staying in the birthing suite after birth

If there is availability in the birthing suite after your baby (or babies) is born, families may choose to stay in the suite instead of a room in the Maternal Newborn Unit. Please note that families who choose to stay in the birthing suite until they are ready to go home will be charged a private room fee.
